In 2002 the Aspinwall, Blawnox and Sharpsburg Fire Departments got together to form
a combined effort to provide river fire/rescue services for the Allegheny River Basin
to include the river areas of the three communities and nearby surrounding communities when requested.
At this time the combined service maintains 5 boats for the use of fire/rescue. The boats are kept
at 2 different locations along the river. Any member of any department can man any of the craft.
In 2007 the Blawnox Volunteer Fire Company became an Accredited Level
I Water Rescue Team with Pennsylvania Water Rescue and the Pennsylvania
Water Rescue Instructors Association.
